Company History by Bob Brown

Over 30 years ago, I started a small landscape maintenance company in Northfield, New Jersey, in the ever growing South Jersey region. At the time, I was working full time for a utility construction company and during the evenings and weekends I worked to develop the Robert W. Brown Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance Company. Our landscaping work consisted primarily of property maintenance. I became skilled and efficient at lawn care, pruning, planting, and small landscape construction projects.

As the South Jersey region grew, so too did the company and its scope of work. We had become the local leaders in landscaping and expanded our skills to become experts in building the complete landscape. The company had become self reliant and could handle all tasks involved in completing a residential project from start to finish. This included fine grading, hardscaping, water features, plantings, and tree installation.

In 1980, the company moved out of Northfield to a five acre site in Galloway Township. The new location allowed for the growth of the maintenance fleet and provided the opportunity to expand the construction capabilities of the company. The addition of new machines allowed us to increase our proficiencies and enabled us to compete for larger scaled residential and commercial projects. The growth of the company prompted a change in name and as a result we became the R.W. BROWN LANDSCAPING COMPANY.

We continued our growth thru the 1990’s and our green trucks where omnipresent throughout the region and beyond. They could be seen raising the bar for future landscape projects and companies as they became a symbol of integrity, discipline, efficiency, and hard work. An R.W. BROWN truck on a job site was a guarantee that the job would be done right.

As the new millennium approached, we were undertaking landmark projects around the region. We began to work closely with larger construction companies providing both pre and post construction services that included fine site grading, site development, tree and shrub removal/ relocation/ protection, and installation of landscape products.

Today, as our environment and surrounding ecosystems are struggling to survive, R.W BROWN LANDSCAPING COMPANY has made great efforts to do our share in protecting the environment. We have implemented a series of best management practices that reduces the amount of pesticides and pollutants our lawn care teams use to maintain landscapes. Our commercial construction teams apply erosion control practices that minimize run off by utilizing drainage swales that allow surface water to percolate through the soil recharging the ground water supply.

We have worked to regenerate native plant communities through our landscape renovations and in the future we anticipate the addition of a tree farm that will enable us to grow our own native plants. We strive to satisfy all our clients, both large and small, by providing impeccable services that result in well designed, constructed, and maintained projects that hopefully leaves our clients with a new found appreciation for nature.
